Lordenshaw Loop Hike, Northumberland

Lordenshaws loop walk is in the Northumberland National Park. Its a 3 miles walk which takes 1-2 hours

Being only a few miles from Rothbury, you can see Rothbury off in the distance. And Simonside Hills to the opposite side – another great walk

Lordenshaws loop walk is a casual nice walk you can undertake on a sunny day.

How to Get There

Lordenshaws Loop walk has its own car park which, although small, can fit about 30 cars in. You can take 2 different walks from this car park, Lordenshaw Loop walk being one of them.

From Rothbury (10-minute drive)

If you leave Rothbury by driving over the bridge and heading south, you can drive on the B6342. Around 8 minutes down the road there is a turning to your right, signposted Simonside Hills. Take this turning and it is the first car park on the right-hand side.

From Morpeth (30-minute drive)

Morpeth is probably the closest biggest town to Lordenshaws Loop walk. Leaving Morpeth head out following Pottery Bank and onto the A192. You follow this road until you reach the A1. Drive on the A1 for only 1 junction turning off for the A697 towards Long Horsley. Once you reach the crossroads in Long Horsley, take the West road heading towards the Forget Me Not Country Park. By then taking a right then left. After driving along this road for a few minutes, take the first proper turning on your right (not the driveway). Follow this road towards Forestburn Gate. Continue straight on the B632, the road bends round to the right but take the turning for Simonside (brown sign). The car park is then the first car park on your right.

Lordenshaws Loop Walk

By starting in the car park, do not cross the road. This is the start of another walk we are yet to take! Straight ahead of the car park is a sunken grass pack heading slightly uphill.

Once you reach the brow of the hill you can see great views across the valley where the small town of Rothbury lies. Take a right through some large stones and then turn left again down a sunken path which takes you down hill through fields of heather.

Carry on down the hill until you reach a stile and cross it. You will then walk downhill some more into a burn. Continue on the small grassy path and step across the small stones which are over a very small stream. You can then cross another stile into the next field.

There is yet another field until you reach another stile into a sheep field. There is a path on the right-hand side of the field with the fence on your right. Continue through the field until you reach the end.

Come out of the field and turn left on the farmers track

A few hundred meters up the road, you come to where the track goes straight on but is signed posted as a private road, take the turning to the left and continue down the track.

Once you reach the end of the track, there is a farmer’s house and the path continues in between the buildings right in front of you.

Once through the gate at the end, the path turns right and in between a small area of cherry trees on your left and some small farm houses/shacks on your right.

The path goes up a small hill and off to the left, take the path on the right. The sign post points towards this direction and towards another stile.

Continue the way of the sunken grassy path as it winds uphill back towards the area of the car park.

Once you reach the top you should be able to see the car park from here. Continue on the path by retracing your steps.

The Lordenshaws Loop walk is a moderate walk to the number of hills. By doing the walk this way, you seem to walk down more hills rather than up which I enjoy more. It is a casual walk and you can walk it in around 1-2 hours. We stopped for lunch too by sitting in the farmer's field. When doing so, we saw a little weasel pop out from under the hedge!

We walked this walk while staying in the area anyway and a nice little walk to round off our weekend away in Northumberland.
